Business Built on Family Roots
Hollandia’s story begins with John Guldemond, who immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands and established a small business rooted in his family’s landscaping traditions. What began as growing and selling plants soon evolved as clients requested thoughtfully designed backyard pools — a niche service at the time, reserved largely for the wealthy and considered a true luxury.
Recognizing this opportunity, John founded Hollandia in 1948. As backyard pools became more accessible and popular, the company grew alongside the industry, adapting to changing design preferences, construction techniques, and materials. Hollandia’s early success was driven by a combination of landscaping expertise, technical curiosity, and a commitment to quality that continues to define the company today.
Evolving with the Industry
As the pool industry advanced, Hollandia stayed at the forefront — working with a range of construction methods including concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl systems. This adaptability allowed the company to meet diverse client needs while maintaining consistent standards of craftsmanship and performance.
In 1980, John retired and transitioned the business to the next generation: his daughters Christina and Annette, along with sons-in-law Walter Schmoll and Ed Spitters. Together, Walter and Ed led the company through a period of growth and refinement, strengthening Hollandia’s reputation for quality residential pools and expanding its technical expertise.
Following the untimely passing of Ed in 2011, the company continued forward with resilience and clarity, remaining firmly rooted in its family-driven values.
Leadership, Experience, and Continuity
In 1994, Todd McCormick joined Hollandia’s construction department, bringing valuable hands-on experience and leadership skills. Over time, Todd moved into management, where his deep understanding of construction processes and team leadership proved essential to the company’s continued success.
Todd eventually became Vice President and a partner, working alongside Walter Schmoll to guide Hollandia’s operations and long-term vision. This continuity of leadership has allowed the company to preserve its culture while evolving to meet modern project demands.
One of the most pivotal moments in Hollandia’s history came with the strategic expansion into commercial and public aquatic facilities.
Like many pool builders in Canada, Hollandia faced the challenge of seasonal residential construction. Rather than risk losing skilled employees during winter months, the company chose to broaden its scope to include public and commercial pools. This decision allowed Hollandia to provide year-round employment, retain top talent, and take on increasingly complex aquatic projects.
Today, Hollandia is recognized for delivering top-tier commercial aquatic recreational, training, and competition facilities, leaving its mark across the nation and establishing itself as a trusted builder in both public and private sectors.
Alongside its commercial expertise, Hollandia continues to specialize in custom concrete and vinyl residential pools and spas, creating personalized backyard environments that balance design, comfort, and long-term durability.
